Why people still love the high street

Online shopping grows in popularity each year but still the high street is the strongest contender. Why do people love the high street so much?

It is easy to find reasons why the high street shopping is less popular. When is it busy the crowds can be very stressful, and there’s the constant queuing that can be quite depressing. Mothers of small children will find it a nightmare trying to get a buggy into crowded shops and it’s made worse by bags of shopping. The shops themselves can be massively crowded with people seemingly fighting over items as the bargains start to run out.

People often are mistrustful of internet shopping. They are concerned that sites are not secure and that their card details may be stolen by online hackers. Often people don’t quite understand what makes a site secure and so prefer to take their chances with the high street shops where they know they are safe.

Sometimes it is hard to judge whether an item is right simply by browsing online and viewing a single picture. Certainly there are sites that offer full video of the items they sell but these are few and far between. It is hard to tell for instance whether a bed or sofa is just right by looking at it and reading a description. There are some things that people just like to sit on and test out before committing to make a purchase.

With clothing sometimes the sizing issue comes up as a barrier. People don’t have to have to order several sizes, or keep sending an item back until they get the right size. Certainly whilst there are shops on the high street allowing you to try clothes on there’s no need to!
It’s the same with perfume too – why would you buy a new perfume without having smelt it first?

For some people it boils down to wanting to spend cash! When the credit cards are to the maximum limit, or you’re avoiding getting into debt some people find it easier to just avoid the lure of credit cards and to pay in hard cash instead. This requires the high street which accepts cash!

Of course online shopping comes with bargains and money savings as well as lots of voucher codes. So if you combine the high street for finding the right size or item and then shop around online you might find that you can combine the best bits of both worlds!
